It's been a few #mmjfriday's since I've actually posted anything My Morning Jacket (it's been a solo Jim affair) so here we go.
This awesome little set from 2002 is relatively brief compared to the marathon sets we have now but this is 2002, many chapters ago in the Book of Jacket. They were one of 3 or 4 bands to play this night, and they didn't even headline.
I've included three streaming songs below for as many reason:
1) "I Will Sing You Songs" has, what I believe to be, one of the most dramatic and beautiful moments in music in the past decade+. It begins around the 6 minute 40 second mark and culminates at about the 7 minute 45 second mark.
2) "One Big Holiday" because it's in interesting song to listen to in the early days. Far from the polish and refine of today's epic barrage of high voltage rock and roll. They speed up, slow down, and just generally play it a little differently. It's like Canada, everything is just a little bit off (kidding Canada, your country is gorgeous).
Listen to how it speeds up just before the the 3 minute 5 second mark and then at about 3 minutes and 11 seconds everything goes silent except for a few guitar strings and then the rage starts. I like that.
3) "The Way That He Sings" because it's f*cking awesome and beautiful and everyone should sing this with every ounce of might they can muster on top of the highest mountain.
Thanks Lowdog, Jason C. and Magnix.
You folks have a solid one.
